Trace: What Follows, - brick road, dead tree, stain, shadow, 65’l x 20’h x 20’ w, 2011. Dead tree, shadow, used kiln bricks, wood stain, 20’ x 65’ x 20’. Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Cazenovia, NY.Trace: What Follows is about the passage of time.  It is an attempt to fix a moment and to let that moment have a life itself. A resurrected dead tree casts its mark on the ground in the dying light.  The cast shadow, far greater than the actual tree, is elusive, lasting only minutes before disappearing with the sun. This shadow is memorialized in a brick path. The bricks were resurrected from a disassembled kiln and bear witness to many firings. Viewers may carefully walk down the road, choosing different paths as it branches out. When the tree eventually topples over (most likely in the cold winter winds) it is to be laid to rest nearby. The piece will be completed with the planting of a sapling at the base of the brick road where the old tree once stood. Over time, the sapling can aspire to cast a similar shadow.
